Arundel Museum

About The Museum

This independent registered museum was originally established in 1964 in the undercroft of Arundel Town Hall. In 1977, it moved to the Grade 2* listed building at 61 High Street, but it reluctantly had to vacate those premises at the end of 2007.

portacabin

For the 2008 season, it opened in its current temporary portacabin accommodation.

It is now involved in a major fundraising drive to raise a total of £1.6 million to build and fit out a new permanent home on a prime site in the heart of Arundel.

It is a registered charity and is run by the Arundel Museum Society. The Museum is manned entirely by volunteers and relies on subscriptions, donations and fund raising events for its survival.

Visit Us at The History Store

The Museum is located in the History Store. This temporary portacabin accommodation is located in the Car Park in Mill Road opposite the Castle entrance (see the map on the right, and the photograph above).

For the summer season, we plan to open every day of the week from 11.00am to 3.00pm. However, all our stewards are volunteers, and we have no paid staff. So sometimes we are not able to open because a steward is unavailable.

You might also look out for our stall at the Arundel Farmers' Market every month. You can buy our cards and walks leaflets there.

Medieval Tortington Exhibition at The History Store

Formally opened on 14 July, Medieval Tortington is the latest exhibition at The History Store.

It was hoped that the display would feature the Museum’s 13th Century Lead Coffin Lid from Tortington Priory, but it is too delicate to frequently move, and too valuable to be in the portacabin.  Instead, we have a life-size facsimile on display, along with other artifacts from the excavation of the site.

The coffin lid has been recently restored with a grant from the Pilgrim Trust.  On the right is a photograph of the work in progress at the workshops of Plowden and Smith Ltd who carried out the restoration.

The Medieval Tortington exhibition will run until the Autumn.
