Family History Research

Has your family ever lived or worked in Arundel or the surrounding villages?  If so, would you like research undertaken on your family?

We can probably help you if you have always wanted to know more about your family roots but do not know how to get started, or if you have started but got stuck, or if you want local knowledge that will help you write the story of a special relation or branch of your family.

Sue Sawyer, our family history co-ordinator, has built up an extensive catalogue of information about local families, their genealogy, where they lived and what they did for a living.  She has used this catalogue to research many families in detail in response to requests for information.  Please click here for a list of some of the families she has already helped.

This information comes from museum records and research done for the many requests she has undertaken over the last few years.  Sue can also access information from numerous sources including:

  • parish records
  • national censuses
  • voting registers
  • historical archives

And there is also Sue's sixth sense for a new source!

In some cases, the Museum's collection includes photographs of people and places relevant to old Arundel families.

If you would like Sue to do research into your family history, please complete our family history research form.  Include as much information as you can so that the chance of coming up with the goods is increased.

You can download two versions of the form:

  • Click here for a version to edit using Microsoft Word.  When complete, save it, attach it to an email, and send it to ssawyer007@gmail.com (click on Sue's email address to open a pre-addressed email).
  • Click here for a version to print and fill in by hand.  When complete, post it to:

Please include a stamped addressed envelope.

Alternatively, you can collect a form from the History Store, and post it to Sue.  While you are there you can view a list of local family names that Sue already has information about.

Sue gives her time free to the Museum but, in return for research done, she will ask you to make a donation to Museum funds depending on the amount of research undertaken.  Sometimes, a marriage certificate or other document may be needed which incurs a charge; Sue will ask your permission to do this first, and you will be asked to reimburse Sue directly.

If you pay Income Tax, we will invite you to complete a gift aid declaration when making your donation.  This will enable the Museum to recover, from the Inland Revenue, 28p for every £1 you give to the Museum for the research.  We can send you the form, or you can click here to download and print off our donation form.
