Exchange of Contracts for Our New Site

Arundel Museum Society (AMS) is extremely pleased to announce that it has exchanged contracts with Arundel Castle Trustees Limited for the grant of a new lease in respect of the site of the new museum in Mill Road, Arundel.  The contract allows AMS to take possession of the site at the end of October, and once negotiations have been concluded with the preferred Building Contractor, demolition of the existing St Nicholas Hall will commence.

Thereafter, the building of the new museum will start - with the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arun District Council (both of whom are providing secured funding) and other benefactors.  It is anticipated that the building will be completed by late 2012/early 2013.  Once completed, Arundel Castle Trustees will grant AMS a lease of the site for a term of 50 years.

Over the next 12 months there will be much to do (planning the fit out, sorting exhibits for display, employing staff, etc.) so work will continue unabated by an enthusiastic team of members and volunteers in respect of this exciting and vibrant project.

Last, but not least, AMS wishes to record its heartfelt thanks to Arundel Castle Trustees and the Angmering Park Estate Trustees for their substantial support for this venture; without it, there would be no museum.

Scenic Flights over Arundel

Mark Phillips, one of our volunteers, has arranged a reduced price for AMS members and their guests on pleasure flights from Shoreham Airport.  It is a 30-35 minute River, Kings & Castles package, the route takes in Shoreham, Worthing, Arundel Castle, and Littlehampton, and it includes 8-10 minutes circling Arundel.  Each flight takes three passengers, and everyone has a window seat.  There will be ample opportunity for taking photos.

The discounted cost will be less than £50 per person (to be paid on the day), based on plane loads of 3 passengers, and interest by 15 people or more in total.

To assist with administration, please apply with groups of three people if possible, although Mark is happy to accept single applications and will group these in threes where possible.

It will be the responsibility of a nominated leader of each group of three to arrange the flying date and time with the operators, Brighton Scenic, and to liaise with other members of the group.

To find out more about their flights and planes, please click here to visit the Brighton Scenic website.  Or you can email Mark at kiasu1960@gmail.com.

If you want to make a booking, click here to download a form to edit using Microsoft Word.  When complete, save it, attach it to an email, and send it to kiasu1960@gmail.com (click on Mark's email address to open a pre-addressed email).

Arundel Sussex

Those members who use Facebook on the internet may well be familiar with Arundel Sussex, a Facebook site that majors on photos and othe images of Arundel and the immediate area.  And they will be aware of the support that Arundel Sussex gives the Museum in terms of publicity.

What they might not know is that an informal monthly gathering of friends of Arundel Sussex is held in the Town Bar of the Norfolk Arms Hotel.  The next meeting is at 7.00pm on Friday 7 October, but whether you join them there or not, please check out this Facebook site, and become a friend of Arundel Sussex.

Robin Farrington's Research into the History of Trinity Chapel

trinity_chapel

Robin Farrington, one of our members, is currently spending part of his time researching the history of Trinity Chapel in Tarrant Street.

Trinity Chapel was erected in 1837 by the Congregational Dissenters of Arundel, and was opened for public worship in 1838.  Previously they had worshiped in a chapel two doors down; this is now Larkins grocery store.

Worship continued in Trinity Chapel until 1981, but today the building is known as Nineveh House and is used as an antiques and crafts store.

Please click here to visit Robin's website to learn more about his research, and to listen to audio guides (in English and German).

Can You Write Arundel's History?

Museum volunteers are capturing memories of life in Arundel between 1939 and 1953, that is from the beginning of the Second World War to the Coronation.  We have already recorded a range of individual memories of how Arundel fared and how it changed during these crucial years.  These recordings, together with their written transcriptions will become an important part of Arundel Museum's collection.

We need help!  We urgently need volunteers to transcribe these memories from audio recordings to paper.  The recordings are provided on CD but audio cassette is possible.  If you have access to a computer, are able to touch type and wish to contribute to this and future oral history projects, please contact Roger Halls by telephone on 01903 214231 or Al Dunn on email at al.dunn01@btconnect.com.
