Arundel Museum & Heritage Centre

About The Museum

This independent registered museum was originally established in 1964 in the undercroft of Arundel Town Hall. In 1977, it moved to the Grade 2* listed building at 61 High Street, but it had to vacate those premises at the end of 2007. For the 2008 season, it opened in its current temporary portacabin accommodation.

It is a registered charity and is run by the Arundel Museum Society. The Museum is manned entirely by volunteers and relies on subscriptions, donations and fund raising events for its survival.

Visit Us at The History Store

The Museum is now located in the History Store. This temporary portacabin accommodation is located in the Car Park in Mill Road opposite the Castle entrance (see the map on the right, and the thumbnail photograph on the left).

For the summer, we are open every day of the week from 11.00am to 3.00pm.

Also, look out for our stall at the Arundel Farmers' Market every month outside The Edible Sandwich. You can buy our cards and walks leaflets there.

Our Plans for a New Museum

At the end of 2007, the Museum reluctantly had to vacate the building in the High Street that had been its home for thirty years, and it moved into its current temporary portacabin accommodation.

It plans to build a new permanent home on a prime site in the heart of Arundel, planning permission having been obtained in March 2009. The Museum Society is currently involved in a major fundraising drive.

Exhibitions in The History Store

The current exhibition shows where Roman Remains have been found in and around Arundel. If you thought that Arundel was a Norman town, think again. You may be surprised at how much evidence of Roman occupation there is. The Romans had three villas here, and numerous finds show that there was a busy Romano-British settlement in Arundel Park.

Roman Remains has enabled us to bring some of our interesting finds out of storage, and shows the location of finds and a selection of pottery, building materials and other artefacts, including a rare blade from a gladius (the Roman short sword).

From the middle of August, the Museum will host an exhibition on Medieval Tortington which will run through next winter.
